Refugee Week Celebrations 2024 – Our Home

EventsNewsOur Stories

We had another great Refugee Week at The Comfrey Project in June, exploring this year’s theme of “Our Home”.

The Comfrey Project asked what ‘Home’ really meant, and together crafted an entire week of celebrations. Every day of the week had its own theme(s), and our staff and volunteers have collected a fantastic gallery of images showing the rich and diverse range of activities on offer, which you can check out below.

Monday: Earth is Our Home.

We all walk together upon this earth, so on Monday we spent a day celebrating nature and the beauty around us. We enjoyed the simplicity of nature and used flowers and leaves to make dies and prints.

Tuesday: Food is Our Home.

Food brings everyone together and food speaks everyone’s language, so on Tuesday we spent the day cooking, learning how different cultures go about reducing food waste and sharing recipes from around the world. Some volunteers headed over to Vindolanda to deliver Roman cooking workshops for the Magna Project.

Tuesday: Music is Our Home.

Music can take you anywhere you want to go. It holds memories and has the ability to help you process emotions! We welcomed the Caedmon Choir into our Comfrey family and sang away the evening in our garden and The Glasshouse also visited our garden, and ran a wonderful music session in the sunshine for the little ones!

Wednesday: Our Body is Our Home.

Taking care of our bodies is something we should take for granted – it is the home we carry with us wherever we roam. On Wednesday we nurtured our bodies with healthy fruit and smoothies, and learned how mindfulness can help us feel well in both our bodies, and our mind.

Thursday: Women are Our Home.

Women are the heart of our home. Women are the strong, and fierce protectors of our family and community. On Thursday we celebrated the amazing women with food, stories of strength and lots of dancing!

Friday: Comfrey is Our Home.

The Comfrey Project is home to many. We are here to support people to put down roots in their community and once you visit, you become family! We were lucky enough to receive a very generous donation from Michael Rakowitz, the Artist behind The Baltic‘s Waiting Gardens of The North – So, on Friday we spend the day learning about the plants from this garden and planting them here at the Comfrey, so the Waiting Gardens can grow on to thrive and welcome many more people to come!

Saturday: Language is Our Home.

Language is no barrier here at the Comfrey. We all speak the language of hope and support. Our Language Cafe joined The KittiWake Trust’s Multilingual Library for a day of celebrating Language and community.

Sunday: Friends are Our Home.

Sometimes all you need is a friend, and HostNation put on a fantastic celebration of Friendship here at The Comfrey Project on the Sunday, with music, fun, games and food.
