Sir Stuart Etherington visits the Comfrey Project
2 September 2010 – 9:25 am
Sir Stuart Etherington, Chief Executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), came to Newcastle last Friday to visit the Comfrey Project and the East Area Asylum Seekers Support Group.
After a tour of the west end allotment site, lunch was served in the willow bower with some tasty food from around the world, cooked on the spot by the project’s users. Staff and trustees also appreciated the visit and got some useful tips on funding and connections. Unsurprisingly, the visit closed in a sudden downpour but a good time was had by all.
In the morning Sir Stuart visited the East Area Asylum Seekers Support Group, one of our partner organisations that do fantastic work supporting refugees and asylum seekers in the East End of Newcastle.
Comfrey Project featured in Society Guardian
9 June 2010 – 12:26 pm
The Comfrey Project is featured in today’s Society Guardian (page 6). The article charts the developments in the six months since we won Guardian Charity Award 2009 and features a lovely photo of a project user on one of the allotments.
As a result of this coverage we were also mentioned on the Landshare blog. Landshare came out of TV’s River Cottage, with the idea of matching people who have spare space in the garden with people who want to grow veg but don’t have anywhere to do it.

The Comfrey Project to launch evaluation results
17 February 2010 – 1:56 pm
The Comfrey Project are holding an event to launch the results of the evaluation that was recently carried out by Barefoot Research and Evaluation.
The findings of the evaluation have been overwhelmingly positive and come at a great time, following the announcement in December that The Comfrey Project has been named one of the Guardian Charity of the Year winners for 2009.
The event is aimed at those who work with refugees and asylum seekers, to tell them more about what we do, share the findings of the evaluation and provide more information about how organisations might work with us in the future.
The event will take place from 3.30pm to 5pm on Thursday 11th March 2010 in central Newcastle.
If you are interested in attending, please email us for more information: info@thecomfreyproject.org.uk
The report will be available on this website after the event.
Guardian Charity Awards success
9 December 2009 – 1:05 pm
The Comfrey Project is one of five winners nationally in Guardian Charity Awards 2009.
The charity, which was selected from almost 500 entrants, will receive a cheque for £1,000, a new computer and consultancy from NCVO and The Media Trust.
Jayne Butler, Manager, said:
“We’re excited by the opportunity this award gives us to grow our work but also to grow the idea that it is hugely important to offer sanctuary to strangers who need it.”
There is a short film about the project on the Guardian website: Guardian Charity Award 09: The Comfrey Project
